Top 10 Best Baby Carriers
Your baby’s favorite baby carrier will be free… your arms and those of loved ones. When traveling long distances, or even lapping around the house singing lullabies, it can be nice to have support carrying your baby. Here are some of the best baby carriers on the market today.
What type of baby carrier do I need?
Baby carriers come in all shapes and sizes. Here’s a few things to consider when picking out a baby carrier:
Make sure your carrier has support across the upper and lower back. This is essential for walking with your baby for an extended period of time.
Check the age range duration of use for the baby carrier and weigh that into the cost. Some newborn lightweight baby carriers are more affordable, but they won’t last very long and often lack the necessary lumbar support. While it may cost double the price, it may be worth it to invest in a baby carrier that will last from the newborn stage until 2 years of age.
Consider the material’s breathability and toxicity. Overheating can increase a babies risk of SIDS. Having organic cotton or hemp material may be important to having a less toxic carrier, especially since it’s possible your baby will try to suck on the fabric. While cotton is a more breathable fabric, mesh may allow more airflow, but be sure to avoid a solid polyester fabric as it will have no breathability at all. If you’re likely to be out in the sun choose a light colored material to help prevent your baby from overheating.

My personal take:
In my initial research for a baby carrier I was overwhelmed by the amount of styles there are and focused too heavily on the newborn stage. First, I chose the Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier Mini. While it was great for the first month or two, our baby quickly grew heavier and heavier and the lack of lower back support puts a lot of pressure on the shoulders and upper back. While this carrier worked decently well for me it was simply too small and uncomfortable for my husband to use. For him, we decided to get the Ergo Baby Omni 360. It is very supportive and better lumbar support on his back. We wish it was a little easier to put on, but perhaps we’ll get the hang of it the more we use it.
I love my Boba Organic Wrap. At first, I thought putting on a wrap would be too complicated, but after watching a YouTube video I learned quickly! My baby loves it and still is able to take naps in it to this day. It also distributes the weight very well across your back.
For quick support around the waist we also decided to purchase the TushBaby hip carrier. It’s a nice alternative when walking short distances, to wear in the house when baby just wants to be carried, or to throw in the bottom of a stroller on an outing.
If I had to pick out a carrier for my registry all over again I would try to splurge on a more versatile carrier that would last from newborn through 2 years, had a good combination of softer, breathable material and back support. I feel like we overbought on our baby carrierers, yet still feel like I might need my own carrier down the road that is still comfortable after our baby hits the 1 year mark. I think for a long-lasting choice and because I love supporting environmental causes (particularly Jane Goodall!) next time I’d wish to try the Artipoppe Zeitgeist Jane Goodall. Also if we have baby #2 the Mumsie Overalls are cute during pregnancy and practical postpartum!
