Best High Chairs of 2024

There are so many high chair options out there! The purpose of a high chair is that it supports a child’s posture while eating to avoid the likelihood of choking. It also elevates a child to experience the family dynamic at the dinner table or to watch activities around the kitchen. These days many high chairs either offer the option to recline or have a newborn attachment that is sold separately to use during a baby’s first six months of life or until they are able to sit on their own. The newborn option allows baby to be a part of family dinner time even before they are old enough to eat. The high chair is a place of many first tastes, messes, laughs, and more, so check which one is best for you!

What to consider when buying a high chair:

  • Material. Food will often be eaten right off the tray. Most trays are made out of “food-grade” plastic while a few are made out of coated wood.  Some brands also come with washable tray covers. If you’re unable to find a tray you’re happy with another option is always to skip the tray and set the high chair right up to your table. Chairs can come as is or with cushions that may be made out of organic cotton or water-proof polyester.

  • Seat posture. It’s important for your toddler to be sitting as upright as possible with their firmly on the footrest.

  • Ease of use.  Some wooden chairs are top choices for durability but adjustments can be time consuming and require tools.

  • Durability & longevity. Can this chair support newborns by tilting or with an attachment? Can parts of the chair be removed for a toddler to use as a booster chair later in life? Will the materials the chair is made out of hold up over time?

  • Storage. How much space do you having in your dining room? Some chairs have wide legs and may take up considerable space. They can also be tripping hazards. Will you need to store the chair when not in use?

  • Accessories.  How much do accessories cost?  The price of the chair can increases significantly when accessories are needed.  Often the newborn attachment, tray, and even chair cushions can be sold separately.

My personal take:

The most popular brands are by far the Stokke Tripp Trapp and the Bugaboo Giraffe. Considering a toddler is likely to make a mess and eat off the surfaces of a high chair I considered it to be of high importance that the chair cushion and tray were made out of good materials.  Unfortunately almost every high chair I found had a tray that was made out of plastic.  Two European companies, Charlie Crane and Nobodinoz, offer a plywood tray.  This may be a good option, but it is worth further investigation since sometimes plywood (vs a solid wood) can also house harmful chemicals used in the glue that sticks plywood together.  I am surprised more companies do not offer a steel or silicone tray cover. In any case, you can always opt not to use a tray and pull the high chair right up to a dining table.

I love the simplicity of the ND54 and the fact that it is made out of all solid wood.  The Charlie Crane TIBU High Chair is a great option for an organic cushion and a wood tray, but some customers complain about the quality of the steel construction and ability of littles ones to climb out of it.  I love the versatility and fun nature of the Bloom Fresco.  It is easily adjustable, spins, and can easily be tilted to go into “newborn mode.” While it is not made out of natural material, its plastic and stainless steel parts are all BPA, phtalate, lead free and “food safe.”  I also like that the food tray comes with a removable insert to make cleaning up a little easier.

The IKEA Antilop is a very affordable choice and you can add a footrest to ensure your toddler has a more well supported posture.

Stokke Tripp Trapp vs. Bugaboo Giraffe

For us, at them of our purchase our choice was between the popular Stokke Tripp Trapp and the Bugaboo Giraffe.  The Stokke Tripp Trapp is a tried and true high chair that has been leading the market for a long time.  What is great about the Stokke Tripp Trapp is that the seat comes with an organic cotton cover.  For this reason I think it is a better and safer nontoxic choice vs. the Bugaboo Giraffe.  The Bugaboo Giraffe cushion is made out of polyester with a water-resistant coating.  I contacted Bugaboo about the safety of their tray and unfortunately did not get a direct answer.  “The Bugaboo Giraffe is crafted from FSC-certified beechwood and ICSS-certified bio-based materials. In The Bugaboo Giraffe is PFA-free and BPA-free, the pillows are chemical-free fabrics.”   The benefit of the Bugaboo Giraffe over the Stokke Tripp Trapp is that it wins by far on ease of use.  Adjustments to footrest settings on the Bugaboo Giraffe and clean ups from spills (or blowouts) are instant, whereas with the Stokke Tripp Trapp an allen key is required to make adjustments and the cushions are more difficult to clean.
